Introduction

The reception of asylum seekers including the provision of housing is under the supervision of the Reception and Identification Services (RIS), an independent agency under the General Secretariat of Migration Policy, Reception and Asylum of Ministry of Citizen Protection.

According to the law, special attention should be given to vulnerable people.

In Greece, a variety of accommodation schemes are applied including large-scale camps, hotels, apartments and NGO-run facilities.

Despite the efforts made in order to increase reception capacity, destitution and homelessness remain matters of concern.

An unknown number of asylum seekers remain homeless in urban areas, especially in Athens and Thessaloniki.
