Introduction
Back to: Know-How: Support in Finding Accommodation (Austria)
In Austria the accommodation of asylum seekers is clearly regulated. Refugees during the asylum procedure receive adequate accommodation and care as part of their basic needs.
Each of the nine Austrian provinces has to fullfil a certain quota according to the resident population. In autumn 2015, a reception standard of 1.5 per cent of the population was set, according to which refugees should be distributed across the whole of the municipalities and districts. The distribution of refugees among as many communities as possible could not be achieved in this way.
Legal basis
- EU Directive establishing standards for the reception of applicants for international protection
- Federal Basic Supply Act 2005
- Universal Service Agreement (Federal-Länder Agreement)
- Land legislation implementing the universal service agreement
- Federal Constitution Act on the Housing and Distribution of Foreigners in Need of Assistance and Protection
