Recognition of existing qualifications

General information

In addition to the basic clarification of residence and work permits, many refugees are also concerned with the question of whether already completed qualifications or existing professional qualifications can be recognized. For this purpose, there is the so-called recognition procedure in Germany. The recognition of qualifications is particularly important if the refugee wishes to pursue a regulated profession in Germany.

Regulated professions are professions that cannot be practiced without a state admission procedure and without recognition of qualifications. In Germany, for example, this applies to occupations in the health and education sectors. 1

The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees emphasizes that although no formal recognition of qualifications is necessary for non-regulated occupations, it can nevertheless be very useful. This enables the potential employer to better assess qualifications and, under certain circumstances, it improves the chances of success on the labor market.2

By the way! For the recognition procedure, the asylum seeker neither needs a residence permit nor does nationality play a role.
