Summary

In this course section you learned to be aware of stereotypes and their positive and negative effects. It has been underlined that stereotyping is a partly useful way to reduce complexity and to give orientation. On the other hand, negative effects of stereotyping such as prejudice and discrimination have been explained.

Some social and psychological models of the process of stereotyping have been introduced, and a model of four steps of the stereotyping process (selection, generalisation, categorisation, petrification) has been presented. You received stimulation to identify the stereotypes you use yourself and to recognise stereotyping processes in your social environment.

Concluding, you learned about ways to overcome stereotypes and to handle them in a useful way.
