Tax Registration Number and Social Security Number

A Tax Registration Number (ΑΦΜ) is necessary for all transactions with public services, such as filing income tax return at the Tax Agency or for any other activity relevant with taxes, such as getting employed or self-employed, for renting or buying a house etc.

A Social Security Number (AMKA) or a Temporary Security and Health Care Number (ΠΑΑΥΠΑ) is necessary in order to access a number of services, including the Greek healthcare system or to get employment.

How to obtain a Tax Registration Number (ΑΦΜ)
The applicant has to:

  • Show up in person in a tax agency (ΔΟΥ). Alternately, an authorized person can show up as long as he/she has a written authorization attested by the authentication of the applicant’s signature. This declaration can be filled out at a Citizen Service Center or a Police Station
  • Present the following documents:
    • The original and a copy of his/her valid residence permit or “applicant for international protection card” or “asylum seeker’s card”;
    • Proof of his/her residence (in case that the asylum seeker’s card does not indicate it).
      • The place of residence can be proved by a certification issued by the authority or agency that manages the accommodation (Asylum Service, NGO or other actor)
      • People hosted by another person, need to submit an official, written declaration from that person. This declaration must include their tax number and certification of their signature in a Citizen’s Centre (ΚΕΠ). In addition, evidence (such as a lease, the contract of the house or a copy of a utility bill) that they are the owner or tenant of the address is needed.
    • Fill in the documents entitled “Tax Registration Number submission statement” (M1) and “Statement of Taxpayer’s Relationship” (M7)
