What happens if a person loses the job?

If a person loses His/her job through no fault of their own (e.g. the company closes down), they can apply for unemployment benefits. One can get the unemployment benefits if one is unemployed and one was insured for unemployment for a certain amount of time prior to becoming unemployed.

If a person wants to apply for unemployment benefits, he/she also has to meet some other conditions. The amount of money the person can receive depends on how long he/she has been employed. Application for unemployment benefit must be done at the Employment Service of Slovenia.

If the person is are fired on grounds of fault or quits the job without a justified reason (such as health problems etc.), he/she is not entitled to unemployment benefits.

A person who has lost the job and does not have any income or income that falls below a determined minimum income and is not eligible for unemployment benefits, he/she can apply for financial social assistance.

For receiving financial social assistance, one has to fulfil some conditions. The amount of social assistance depends on the previous income, the number of family members, property, savings, care entitlement and possible existence of grounds of fault. Application for for financial social assistance is done at the Centre for Social Work in the place of the person’s permanent residence.
