Private apartments

Recognized refugees are entitled to housing (renting/buying) in Greece, at their own expense and in line with the regulations and requirements applicable for Greek nationals.

A refugee can rent an apartment on his/her own, without losing any of the rights as a refugee in Greece.

People choosing the private accommodation will need to sign a lease (to cover a fixed time period, usually at least one year), and to do that they will need to get a Tax Registration Number (ΑΦΜ), issued by the Tax Agency of residence. They can still access cash assistance and social services.

Private apartments’ prices vary, depending on the area. Rental prices are higher in urban areas and for furnished apartments. Most likely, the rental price will not include electricity, water, heating and cleaning costs. A security deposit (usually the equivalent of 2 or 3 months’ rent) has to be paid in advance. According to the Greek law, failing to pay the rent for 3 consecutive months gives the right to the landlord to evict the tenant and keep the security deposit.
