Learning Objectives

In this course section you will

  • learn that intercultural sensitivity is a relevant precondition for the interaction between different cultural groups;
  • hear that intercultural sensitivity means to be aware of cultural contrasts without valuing them;
  • be introduced to the Development Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) by Milton Bennett;
  • learn about the six stages of the model and that the first three stages are based on ethocentrism whereas the stages four to six are based on an ethnorelativistiv world view;
  • get to know all six stages of the development approach in detail, including the attitudes, typical statements and developmental tasks of the respective stage;
  • find out that persons who achieved the highest level „Integration“ have developed a multicultural identity and are able to bridge cultures and act as mediators between different cultural groups.
