Summary
Back to: The Italian Asylum System and Its Functions
In this learning unit, you have discovered that we are therefore a country that feels invaded by asylum seekers and refugees while the reality is very different.
The data analysis summarized above shows:
a) State of emergency
The system is still defined as an emergency in Italy and is now a structural phenomenon; the real emergency is in people’s lives.
b) Small number of refugees
The number of people arriving in Italy and, in general, in Europe, is relatively small, compared to the potential number of refugees, who are now concentrated in neighbouring countries in conditions of hardship and deprivation.
c) Inadequate response
The response given by the European States is insufficient.
d) Precarious conditions
In Italy this population, due to the lengthy procedures for examining applications and the precarious conditions, is confined from the point of view of rights, relationships, territory – where they reside – and the services offered.
