Independent language courses

In addition to the language courses offered as part of the integration courses, there are also online language courses that can be taken from any place. The only prerequisite is a functioning Internet connection. Many of the offers are free of charge and only a user account has to be created.

The Goethe Institute

The Goethe Institute for example, offers asylum seekers free self-study courses, speaking exercises and videos. It also provides information on dealing with the authorities, job search and everyday matters.

The Goethe Institute is a cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany. The institute promotes knowledge of the German language abroad and cultivates international cultural cooperation1.

The Goethe Institute presents a variety of apps for language learning 2:

Ankommen-App
Ankommen-App is a self-study German course. It provides information about living and working in Germany and explains peculiarities of the asylum procedure. This app already sets out a certain language level (A1) and is available in the following languages: German, French, Arabic and Farsi.
Deutschtrainer A1
 Deutschtrainer A1 also requires the language level A1 and is only available in German. The app offers 10 chapters with short audio dialogues on everyday topics.
Die Stadt der Wörter
Die Stadt der Wörter (City of Words) is an app that teaches German in a playful way. The app is suitable for beginners or learners at A1 level.
Sprachführer Willkommen!
The language guide „Willkommen!“ („Welcome!“) facilitates the first linguistic orientation in Germany and also contains basic dialogues as well as an Arabic translation.

The Adult Education Association

The German Adult Education Association provides a learning portal that includes German courses at various language levels (A1-B2). All courses are tutored and free of charge, and they focus on German as a second language, literacy and basic education. Click here for more details.
