Introduction

Unlike many other EU countries, especially Germany, Austria, Greece and Italy, Slovenia has not been seriously affected by the so-called “refugee crisis” in 2015 and 2016. Although the country was part of the “Balkan route” that saw hundred thousands of people fleeing from the war in Syria and from Afghanistan, only a very small proportion of them applied for international protection in Slovenia; most of them were heading towards Germany and Sweden.

However, Slovenia had its “refugee crisis” 20 years earlier, when during the Bosnian War large numbers of refugees entered into the newly established Republic of Slovenia.
