In the context of the largest displacement of people since the World War II, more than 1,600,000 migrants and refugees have arrived to Europe by land and sea routes since 2015. As part of the Eastern Mediterranean migration route, between October 2015 and March 2016 a total of 477,791 migrants and refugees entered Slovenia, with most continuing their journey to other Northern and Western European countries.
The number of applications for international protection filed in Slovenia has increased since 2015 with 1476 asylum claims made throughout 2017, whilst in the first half of 2018, 1430 applications were filed. The majority of asylum seekers in Slovenia in June 2018 were nationals of Pakistan, Algeria, Afghanistan, Morocco, Syria, Iran, Turkey, and Iraq. Slovenia also has a sizeable population of former refugees from Bosnia and Herzegovina who have been granted permanent residence permits.1
